Classic 90s Album Review

 Bush – Razorblade Suitcase

This was Bush’s second album preceded by Sixteen Stone. The album came out in 1996 and instantly there was talk about Bush sounding like Nirvana, but Gavin Rossdale has a very distinctive sound to his voice and his songs, which he writes, are very different. Many people complain about the lyrics not making sense, but why do they feel the need to analyze every word of every song? This was written for entertainment, and like any other song out there, you take from what you want.

I guess Razorblade Suitcase, to some, showed a darker side of Bush. According to Wikipedia, the album was not a great success in terms of sales, but it did reach the number 1 spot on the US billboard 200 charts. The album was produced by Steve Albini, who also produced Nirvana’s In Utero. Other than the fact that the same man produced both albums, I see no resemblance to Nirvana.

It may not be popular to like this album, but despite the constant bad reviews and Nirvana comparisons, this album has great sound and great vocals – it’s just a really great rock album. In my own comparison between Razorblade Suitcase and In Utero, I find no similarities, not in vocals, not in sound, and not in lyrics. From the ballads like Synapse to the rocking guitar sound of Swallowed, this is a classic 90s album. This was Bush keeping grunge alive for those of us who didn’t want to let it go.
