Happy Birth Day America!

Today is the 238th day of Independence for America. What does that mean to you? Do you know what it means? I have but a few moments for today's blog post but I want to paste some excerpts from other articles/websites about today, the day Americans should be celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

So what is today about? Put aside that the writing, the drafting of, the actual event did not take place on the 4th of July. The document was dated July 4, 1776...the day it was signed. Today is about America breaking free and becoming it's own.

From History.com

"Variously known as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues."

Interesting fact,
" John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826--the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence."

From Military.com

"On July 4, 1776, the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States. Each year on July 4th, also known as Independence Day, Americans celebrate this historic event......

Discussions of Jefferson's Declaration of Independence resulted in some minor changes, but the spirit of the document was unchanged. The process of revision continued through all of July 3 and into the late afternoon of July 4, when the Declaration was officially adopted. Of the 13 colonies, nine voted in favor of the Declaration, two -- Pennsylvania and South Carolina -- voted No, Delaware was undecided and New York abstained. John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence. It is said that John Hancock's signed his name "with a great flourish" so England's "King George can read that without spectacles!""

Quote from John Adams :

"The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not."
- John Adams July 3, 1776
I normally do not put links or faith in Wikipedia but the info here seems fairly good.
So when you are picnicking today don't forget what today is really about. Don't forget the people who worked hard and fought hard to make our freedom happen. Don't forget those who still work hard and fight hard to keep us a free nation. Don't forget that we aren't celebrating a day, we are celebrating a new life, a new future. So I will never wish people a "Happy 4th of July" because it's not about a month or a day, its about us becoming free, its about our Independence. Never forget that, and never stop fighting for it. In the world today where our freedoms are being stripped away, never forget what our founding fathers wanted for this nation. Never forget the men and women who fought to give it to us. Don't let their effort be in vain. Keep fighting.
Happy Independence Day America!!
